African Lion

Burning questions:

How does the lion adapt to environment?

How does the lion fit into the food web?

Vocabulary list:

Making something suitable for the purpose or new condition.

A surrounding in which we live.

A group that contains biotic and abiotic components.

An animal suitable for the day time.

An animal suitable for the night time.

Classification of animals in lion's habitat:

Habitat of African lion:

The African lions live in grassy plains, savannas and dry woodlands. These sort of areas provide cover from predators and also for the lions hunting their prey. The male lions watch the prides territory, which can be as large as 100 square miles. The adult female lions are in charge of the hunting business. They usually work as team to outsmart a fast prey. Generally the African lions are nocturnal, sleeping at day time in the tall grass and moving at night from site to site within their territory to find a fresh meal.

What is food web?

A food pyramid is a simple way of looking at a bigger picture called a food web. A food web is made up of all the different plants and animals that have an effect on one another by their feeding habits. A group of food pyramids meshed together make a food web.

What is food chain?

Every living thing needs energy in order to live in life. Everytime animals do something (run or jump) they use energy to do so. Animals get energy from the food they eat, and all living things get energy from the food. Plants use sunlight, water and nutrients to get energy (in a process called photosynthesis). Energy is definitely necessary for living beings to grow. A food chain shows how each living thing gets food, and how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to creature. A food chains begins with plant-life, and end with animal-life. Some animals eat plants and some animals eat other animals.

Food web draft:

Food web poster:

Poster reflection:

Overall I think I have put a significant amount of effort into creating my food web although there are minor errors. In this poster it indicates that the zebra and gazelle eat leaves of the tree's. This is not possible because the height of these two animals don't even meet the average expectations. Also this poster does not indicate in text form that there is a decomposer in the savannah. Throughout my research every habitat has a decomposer. If not it really isn't a habitat. The vulture and hyena are the decomposers of the savannah grassland. There are a few more decomposers in the grassland but I have just indicated the major ones. Another error I have created is that the flesh eating African lion eats the cheetah. I have two supporting reasons why lions don't have cheetah's for there breakfast, lunch and dinner. Reason 1: African lions don't eat there own species. Though the big cats might have a little fuss over each other.Reason 2: There is no chance a lion can catch up with a cheetah in a run. They have very heavy muscles so it is harder to lift there own body weight around. Where the king of speed has a very light body to lift around. To this food web poster I should have added the habitat of the animal on the top right corner because I have an empty space.

Describe role of decomposer:

Decomposers are organisms such as bacteria. Decomposers are generally microscopic creatures, which defines that the humans naked eye cannot spot. Fungi can be seen by the humans naked eye. They eat and break down the remains of the dead matter, freeing the substances that can be used by other creatures in the ecosystem. If the weren’t there in the ecosystem, the plants would not get key nutrients and dead matter will bundle up to a massive quantity. The main occupation of the decomposers is to break down dead matter and recycle nutrients of the dead matter or our earth will be very filthy.

Examples of decomposers

What is an environment & what kind do lions live in:

The word environment bacically refers to what is around you. It's the surroundings in which we live in, such as the land, water and air. Other living things in our planet is plants, animals and etc. There are many different environments in many different places, depending on the weather that place is. In our case most African lions live in grassy plains and woodlands. The lions live where they find supply of food and water. African lions still live in the eastern section of central Africa, most of which preserved in reserves where there protected by the vicious hunters. These amazing carnivores live in cool climates, 24˚C (75˚F) and of course they can with stand hotter climates,

Grassy plains

What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a group that includes biotic components and as well as abiotic components functioning together as one unit.

Biotic components are living organisms. They include primary producers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and decomposers.

Abiotic components are the non-living parts of the environment in which the organisms live in, such as sunlight, water, soil and etc.

The flow chart below shows the types of adaptations of an African lion:

What is the meaning of diurnal? (During the day time)

During the day the temperature is hot. It will be more visible for the lions to hunt and capture there prey.

What is the meaning of nocturnal? (During the night time)

Being a nocturnal animal makes it easier to see in the dark. The African lion has adapted its eyes to see clear in the dark.

Lions are both diurnal and nocturnal. Which means that they hunt in the day and night. Usually lions spend there time relaxing in the shade at day time and start hunting in the late evening.

African lion during the summer

African lion during the winter

African lion during spring

The African lions survive quiet well in the winter season. In the African grassland winter season is basically rainy season. When it rains more vegetations grow well. Then the primary consumers can survive well. As African lions eat primary consumers. But during the summer when it is very hot the African lion has a hard time. The reason is because the plant dies due to the heat and the primary consumers don't get that much food. So all the animals head towards the water whole. All the primary consumers go away from the main area and migrate to areas that have vegetation. This is hard for the lionesses to give the meal to the family.

What is the meaning of symbiosis?

Symbiosis is a situation in which two organisms live together in close associations. Just living in the same place isn't enough. By "close associations" biologists mean that if the two organisms are separated one or both of them would die. So there are three types of symbiosis: Mutualism, Parasitism and Commensalism.

Mutualism is when both organisms benefit from the relationship. A symbiotic relation of a lion; The lions kill their prey and then eat it. The left overs that the the lions leave will feed scavengers like hyenas and vultures. This is mutualism because if benefits both the lions and the scavengers.

Parasitism is when one organism benefits and one is hurt by the relationship.

A symbiotic relation of a lion; The mosquito sucks the blood of the lion. So the mosquito is benefited by getting the lions blood. And the lion will get annoyed.

- Commensalism is a relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected...

Features of an African lion:

- Large mane

- Tuft on the end of the tail

- Skin color is light yellowish brown

- Muscular body

- Loud roar

How are variations inherited or caused by the environment?

Able to run fast to catch prey.

Tuft at tip of tail

Used for balance and for a signal to the cubs.

Loud roar

To alert other lions that there is a presence- Males.

Classify organisms in the African lions environment according to the

a) Types of living things such as plants, fungi and microorganisms
b) Also classify the Vertebrates and the Invertebrates
Vertebrates: Mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
Invertebrates: Starfish, segmented worms and jelly fish

Some of the well known animals in the African lions environment are;
elephants, hyena, cheetah, giraffe, gazelle, and zebra's.
